What are the most important supplements for males over 40?
Updated: May 21, 2020
Oh boy. This is a loaded one. What are the most important supplements for males over the age of 40? There will be a ton of debates over this and everyone is going to have a unique opinion. Here's mine...
Zinc -- Zinc is crucial for the production and regulation of testosterone levels, particularly as one climbs over the age of 40. Additionally, zinc assists in the body's defence against infections. I find that somewhere between 20-40mg per day taken with meals is all I need. When I feel a cold coming on I take a little more, typically 12 hours apart.
Saw Palmetto -- Saw Palmetto works in a number of ways. First off, it's great for your urinary tract and can prevent infections. Second, it helps maintain prostate health and in some studies has been shown to decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Third, saw palmetto may help block the activity of 5-alpha reductase (5α-R), an enzyme that converts testosterone into a hormone linked to hair loss called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Fourth, saw palmetto decreases inflammation. I could go on and on over this supplement.
Vitamin D -- Most people don't get enough vitamin D. And if you're over the age of 40, male or female, you need to add vitamin D to your daily supplements. Vitamin D maintains strength in bones, teeth and muscles. Need I say more?
If you have zinc, saw palmetto and vitamin D covered and you're still interested in taking more pills each morning, here are a few more you may want to consider:
Vitamin E -- is a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce free radical damage and slow the aging process of your cells, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Vitamin A -- Vitamin A is important for normal vision, the immune system, and reproduction.Vitamin A also helps the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs work properly.
Pygeum Bark -- Pygeum is used for treating symptoms of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) and prostate cancer. It is also used for inflammation, kidney disease, urinary problems, malaria, stomachache, fever, and to increase sexual desire.
Beetroot Powder -- Beetroot powder is rich in antioxidants, dietary fiber, calcium, iron, potassium, folate and manganese, along with other nutrients. Perhaps most remarkably, beets are naturally rich in nitrate, compounds that can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, leading to notable health benefits.
And as always, consult your healthcare provider to make sure it's safe for you to take any supplements as some may interfere with medication you're taking.
